Old Scottish Gravestones and their Symbols

Online talk by Mark Hatton

Organised by Fortrose and Rosemarkie Local History Group. Talk for members (annual membership is £5 per year: details from their website ). Links will be sent ahead of the meeting.

Mark Hatton will take us through the history of the symbols found on old gravestones. He has studied the chronological and geographical development of gravestones across Southern Scotland and Northern England and put them into their historical context so as to fully understand the meaning and significance of the symbols to the dead and their grieving relatives.Mark is currently exploring the graveyards and cemeteries in the Highlands.

Five sets of two huts were built in WWII as Equipment Ammunition Magazines to house equipment and ammunition for anti-aircraft guns. They are now in a poor state, posing health and safety risks, and are due to be demolished in the future. Join Aird Heritage Group and ARCH to record them before this happens, photographing and measuring. No previous experience needed.
